A Perfect Fit

Have you ever tried to put on clothing that was either too big or too small for you?  It’s awkward to say the least.  I’ve had the experience of wearing pants that I thought were going to fall down as well as pants that were so tight I couldn’t close them.  In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light.”  As residents of Lancaster County many of us have had a chance to see yoked animals work in a field.  The wise farmer makes sure his animals are comfortable in their yoke so they will be most productive.

Life can be very frustrating when we give maximum effort and see only minimal results.  All of us want our lives to be productive.  This is true in the spiritual part of life too.  We want a belief system which will make life work better for us, not one which will place a greater burden on us.  Jesus understood that as well.  He came into a world where “religion” was used to keep the many under the control of the few.  The Pharisees had rules for almost every area of life.  Many of them were crazy.  Jesus understood that human rules enslave people.  He wanted and wants to free people.  Rather than giving us rules, He invites us into relationship.  This relationship is based on His unconditional love for all of us.  Think about it:  He knows everything there is to know about all of us, yet He loves us anyway.  He wants to have a relationship with each one of us.

As a native of this area, I’m very aware that there is a “religious” mentality similar to that which existed when Jesus was alive.  Some religious people have rules for everything!  And some of their rules don’t make much sense to many of us.  Sadly, some want to impose their personal rules on all of us.  Jesus has a much better way.  Rather than impose an unbearable burden upon us He invites us to yoke ourselves up with Him.  He promises that the result of this union will be rest.  We will experience comfort instead of constant stress and worry.  Jesus fully understands the challenges we face in life because He became one of us.  He knows we often feel like we’re in over our heads.  He knows we are carrying heavy burdens.  He wants to help, not give a greater burden.  He makes a great offer:  “Come to me and I will give you rest.”  I hope you will accept His offer.  You’ll never regret it.
